Safe Cosmetics
Due to the Safe Cosmetics Act that was passed in 2010, the FDA would like to control the cosmetics industry. Regulation is good to a certain extent, but usually this type of government involvement causes prices to go up because companies are forced to follow certain guidelines that increase their cost and lower margins.
Ultimately these costs are passed to the consumer which is unfortunate. However we definitely don’t want unsafe chemicals in cosmetics that are used on infants and children. Skin care is a huge business, a billion dollar business, and this always attracts unscrupulous companies who take shortcuts to make a profit. This is where the FDA or FTC would come in and do some good. But if they decide to over-regulate the market, it will be bad for the entire industry.
